At St John Fisher RC Primary School, we aim to establish a sporting culture that enables and encourages all children to play and enjoy sport.

We have established a number of after- school clubs for our pupils offering a variety of sporting opportunities for our children. We enter many school sporting competitions to allow children to be competitive and are constantly developing our PE curriculum.

What is the PE and Sport Premium Funding?

The PE and Sport Premium is a government grant designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils. The funding is ring-fenced, meaning it can only be spent on PE.

Its purpose is to create sustainable improvements that will benefit pupils now and in the future, embedding positive habits for a healthy and active life:

  • Support all children and young people to live healthy, active lives
  • Make participation in PE and school sport easier
  • Make sure all children can achieve and thrive through increased physical activity and sport, no matter their background or ability
  • Improve children’s health, wellbeing, personal development and academic attainment
  • Embed the foundations of positive and enjoyable participation in regular physical activity.

Our Intent

At St John Fisher, our vision is to create a culture that inspires a healthy, active lifestyle for all. We believe that high-quality physical education and school sport are key to improving overall health, well-being and equipping pupils with the resilience to succeed in all areas of school life.

Our intent is to use the PE and Sport Premium funding to build upon our existing successes and target areas for development. We want all pupils at St John Fisher to build a lasting enjoyment of being active, developing the confidence and understanding to participate in a wide range of physical activities both in school and beyond.

What we do well:

  • Achieving the Platinum Merton School Sports Mark, demonstrating our sustained and high-quality commitment to school sport.

  • Pupils at our school have positive attitudes towards sport and physical activity and, on average, engage in more physical activity than their peers nationally, according to our most recent Healthy Active Lives survey.

  • Continuing to provide a wide range of extra-curricular sporting clubs before during, and after school to cater to diverse interests.
  • Sustaining high level of participation in a variety of festivals, events and competitions across the borough and beyond.
  • High levels of swimming competency in Year 6 pupils.

Key areas will will develop further

  • Inspire and Empower Girls in Sport: We will create dedicated opportunities and spaces for girls to play sports at breaktimes and lunchtimes. We aim to foster an environment where they feel confident and encouraged to attend team trials and represent the school in a wide range of competitions.
  • Broaden Participation in Inter-School Competition: While celebrating our competitive successes, we will increase the opportunities for all pupils to attend inter-school competitions and festivals.
  • Enhance Staff Confidence and Expertise: We will invest in targeted professional development for all staff and utilise our specialist coaching to increase the confidence and skills of our staff.
  • Apply for the Bronze Healthy Schools London award, with the long-term aim of achieving Gold status.
